Interesting things to do when visiting Lamu

Lamu is one of the oldest and well-preserved towns in East Africa. It has an intriguing history and is a beautiful place. You will definitely enjoy a vacation in this town. Here are several things you will get to enjoy in this town and make memorable memories:

1. Visit Lamu old town

Lamu old town is a world heritage town and has a rich Swahili and Arab culture. It is built with mangrove timber and beautiful coral reefs making it authentic and magnificent. It is characterized of very narrow alleys so narrow that cars cannot navigate the streets. Residents here use donkeys, boats, motorbikes and walking as their means of transport. Infact there is only one Vehicle in this town. I loved the beautiful Swahili doors. Make sure to wander through the historic town and interact with the local residents.

2. Ride a donkey

One of the main means of transport in Lamu is the Donkey. Moreso, they have a donkey sanctuary where sick donkeys are treated and given medication. Be sure to visit the sanctuary and ride a donkey. The experience is thrilling.

3. Sail the traditional dhow

The best time to sail the traditional dhow is in the evening when you can watch the sun set and enjoy the relaxing evening breeze. Do you enjoy some of your favorite meals and snacks as you sail and enjoy the beautiful sight of Lamu.

4. Enjoy delicious Swahili dishes.

Swahili food is known for its authentic taste especially for people who love some well spiced up food. Make sure you sample pilau and fish curries. I especially loved the fish samosas. I would literally go back to Lamu just for the Samosas.

5.  Visit the Takwa Ruins.

Takwa ruins is an abandoned village that has dilapidated over the years. It was abandoned back in the 17th century and one of the reasons given for its abandonment is the lack of fresh water in the town.

6. Visit the floating restaurant

Enjoy some nice food, relaxing music and some Kenyan beer from this amazing place. The bar closes at 10:00 am. You will get to interact with locals and other visitors and other tourists and share your diverse experiences.

7. Visit Manda Beach

If you are not staying at Manda beach, then definitely visit it. It has beautiful white sandy beaches, and you enjoy the walks and swims from this place.

8.  Explore the Lamu Museum

It provides a good background for the Swahili culture and Lamu history. The guides are knowledgeable and happily take you through the different artefacts and the history of the town. You will learn a lot by visiting the museum. Make sure you visit.
